Built for you. Not for a shelf.
No two heads are shaped the same.
No two lives are lived the same.
Every Cutter Paul hat is built from the ground up for the individual wearing it — from the first measurement to the final stitch.
This isn’t ordering a size.
This is commissioning something made specifically for you.
The Process
-
A proper fitting hat starts with understanding your exact head shape.
I use a traditional tool called a conformateur to map the precise shape of your head. This device records every curve and subtle variation — because “close enough” isn’t good enough.
From that measurement, I cut your exact head shape out of poplar wood to create what’s called a custom band block.
This block allows me to iron your specific head shape directly into the felt before sewing in the sweatband — giving you a true custom fit that settles in naturally and comfortably over time.
-
All Cutter Paul hats are made using premium 100X Nutria felt — durable, refined, and built to last.
Nutria has been trusted for generations for its durability, water repellency, and breathability. It wears in, not out.
I use Nutria over Beaver, the quality in my opinion is equivalent and Nutria is an invasive species all over the globe.
You’ll choose from a range of colors — from classic neutrals like Bone, Espresso, and Slate to bold tones like Plum, Sunshine, and Pink.
Whether you lean traditional or want to mix it up a little, we’ll find something that feels like you.
-
Every crown is shaped entirely by hand.
I offer classic crown styles — but we’re never locked into a template. If you want to keep it traditional, we can. If you want to get a little funky with it, I’m open to that too.
Brim width and crown height — each decision shapes the personality of the hat.
Nothing is stamped.
Everything is formed with steam, pressure, and patience. -
Inside every hat, I stamp a customized gold leaf message on the sweatband.
“Custom made for ______.”
Or a short phrase that means something to you.
A reminder.
A date.
A promise you made to yourself. The vintage is also stamped on each band, to celebrate the year of creation and an homage to my winemaking roots.
-
Bands, ribbon, leather ties, vintage fabric, subtle accents — this is where the character really comes to life.
Some hats whisper.
Some make a statement.Either way, it’s built with intention and shaped by hand from start to finish.

-
What you walk away with isn’t just a hat.
It’s an heirloom-quality piece designed with intention and soul — built to travel with you, age with you, and carry your story. An extension of me to you.
Choosing your Felt
Every hat begins with the felt.
Felt is the foundation of the piece — the material that determines how the hat holds its shape, how it wears over time, and how it ultimately feels on your head. A well-made felt will mold beautifully, soften with age, and develop a character that becomes uniquely yours.
For my hats, I work primarily with Nutria felt, a material prized in traditional hat making for its durability, structure, and refined finish. It’s strong enough to hold a clean crown shape, yet soft enough to be shaped by hand — the balance that allows a hat to feel both structured and alive.
The felt itself arrives as an open canvas. From there, you’ll choose the color that speaks to your style — whether that’s something classic and understated or a shade that brings a little personality into the piece. The palette ranges from rich earth tones and warm neutrals to deeper moodier colors.
Color also plays a role in how the hat lives with you. Lighter tones highlight texture and shape, while darker colors create depth and drama. Some clients choose a tone that blends easily into their daily wardrobe, while others lean into a statement color that becomes a signature.
Once your felt is chosen, the real transformation begins — blocking, steaming, shaping and refining the crown by hand until it becomes something entirely unique.
The felt is where the story of the hat starts, but the way it’s shaped — and the person who wears it — is what gives it life.
